Morocco Travel Guides

Morocco is the deepest part of Culture With Lina, with nine destination guides. They run from the imperial cities to the Atlantic coast, the Rif mountains, the High Atlas and the Sahara, and each explains the celebration that defines the place, most often the Moroccan wedding in its regional form.

Planning a trip across Morocco

When to go. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) suit almost everywhere. Summer is very hot inland and in the desert, while the Atlantic coast stays cool and windy. Winter is bright in Marrakech but cold at night, with snow on the High Atlas passes.

Routes that work. A first trip usually combines Marrakech, the road over the Tizi n’Tichka to Aït Ben Haddou, two nights in the Sahara and a finish in Fes. The north is its own loop: Tangier, Tetouan and Chefchaouen. Essaouira is the easy coastal add-on from Marrakech, and Imilchil is for travelers timing a trip to the September moussem.

Getting around. Trains link Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, Fes and Marrakech, including the Al Boraq high-speed line in the north. CTM and Supratours coaches cover most other routes. For the mountains and the desert, a car with a driver is the most comfortable option. Mountain roads always take longer than maps suggest. The Morocco train travel guide covers classes, tickets and routes.

Money and etiquette. The dirham is a closed currency, so withdraw cash on arrival; medinas and villages run on cash. Dress modestly away from the beach, greet before you do business, and ask before photographing people. See the guides to money in Morocco, what to wear, visiting a hammam and travelling during Ramadan.

Practical articles. Before you go, read our free explainers on taxis in Morocco (petit vs grand taxis and fares), bargaining in the souks, eating in Morocco, visiting mosques and medersas and useful Darija phrases.
