Tetouan was rebuilt at the end of the fifteenth century by Muslims and Jews expelled from Granada, then filled again after 1609 by Moriscos pushed out of Spain. They arrived as a complete urban society — masons, tilemakers, embroiderers, musicians — which is why a city this size has its own embroidery tradition, a formal craft school, and one of Morocco’s great Andalusian orchestral traditions. Four centuries later Spain made it the capital of its protectorate and built an Art Deco quarter next to the medina.
